Chile to Argentina

Monday, Dec 21 took the 12 hour bus ride from San Pedro de Atacama to Salta, Argentina.  Although 12 hours in a bus that starts 2 hours late is a little tiring this must be one of the most interesting geological routes in the world.

Starts with a slow climb  to the Andies Continental Divide thru what is claimed to be the worlds dryist desert and I believe it.  Starts with no trees to go to no vegetation at all...just rocks and sand.  After going thru joint immigration/customs one of the biggest decents yet with too many switchbacks to count.  We saw one pair of motorcycles making this trip and it would be even more fantastic on a bike.  Bicycle I don't think so...too high and too far between services ...and too windy...but truly spectacular.

Eight happy hours on a curvy road in a big bus brings us to the North part of the "coffee triangle."  The area of Colombia known for the most coffee production.  Havent seem much of it yet, but very pretty area. Ive been in much of the US Rockies where roads are built in the valley or along rivers and every once in awhile we climb over a pass to the next valley.  Here it appears that small settlements were built high near the ridgeline....so the road follows near the ridgeline.  Lots of back and forth driving with limited passing opportunities.  But then hard to get more that 60 kph speed when you have to do a 90 degree turn every 100 yards. Manizales is a town of about 300,000 souls also built on a ridge.  Bus station is a bottom and two enclosed ski lifts (my term) will take you to the top of two separate towns...Manizales or MariaSomething.   Ride cost about US$.45.  This is also a University town so lots of young people around....

2021 Christmas in Chicago and 2022 January in Colombia

      After a two year Covid travel hold, Denyse and I went on a five week trip to Chicago and Colombia. Here's the story.....       Getting to Chicago from Alamosa, CO involves a 6AM Christmas Day bus ride that ends in downtown Denver at 11:30 AM.  Then a Metro light rail ride to DEN, flight to Chicago and arrival about 6PM for a nice North Shore AIRBNB.    But the real reason to head to Chicago was to see (almost) two month old Aerin.         After a nice visit in Chicago at 4AM New Year's Day we returned to OHare for a flight on Spirit Airline for a trip to Medellin, Colombia.  There we were faced with an already growing crowd attempting to get on a 5:30 Spirit flight to Ft. Australia and New Zealand 2019-2020

Australia and New Zealand 2019-2020      This trip started with the world at the old-normal and ended as a new-normal.  During our last month in New Zealand, March,  the Corona-Virus 19 became only topic of news throughout the world.      But let me start at the old-normal in November, 2019.      11/27/2019, the day before Thanksgiving we left our home in Alamosa, Colorado via bus to Denver, Colorado, train out to the airport and on to San Francisco airport, Auckland airport and finally Perth, Western Australia airport.  Suddenly it is 11/29/2019 and we lost Thanksgiving.      Perth, located on the SouthWestern edge of the continent is the only substantial city on that edge.  It is as if San Francisco existed but LA, Portland and Seattle did not.  But it is still 4 time zones away from the Eastern Edge of Australia.   At any rate, it is big enough to have good public transportation an...
